Notification of works in Bullens Green Wood

We would like to advise residents of upcoming woodland management works at Bullens Green Wood, which may be of interest to your parish or neighbouring communities.

These works are part of a wider programme funded through the Sustainable Hertfordshire initiative, aimed at enhancing the ecological value and long-term resilience of woodlands across the county.

The works are scheduled to begin on November 3rd and will run for approximately three weeks. They are guided by the site’s Greenspace Action Plan, and a map of the working areas is attached for reference.

Summary of the planned works:

  • Thinning around 20% of trees in each compartment to improve light levels and support natural regeneration.
  • Creating canopy gaps to increase structural diversity and habitat variety.
  • Widening woodland rides through targeted coppicing and scalloping to improve access and biodiversity.
  • Enhancing deadwood habitat availability.
  • Addressing tree safety concerns along the ride network.

There may be temporary restrictions on permissive paths during operations, clearly marked with signage, but we intend for the woodland will remain accessible throughout. Light machinery and brash matting will be used to minimise ground disturbance,

and timber will be stored within woodland blocks before being moved to hardstanding areas at either end of the wood for future extraction.
